Budget Desktop Computer: these desktops are more suitable for people with basic IT needs. They handle all regular computer applications such as word processing, email and Web browsing. At least 1GB of RAM and a processor with a minimum of 2.5GHz of speed are advisable. For a second home computer, for example, an 80GB hard-drive should suffice. For a primary computer, a 120-250GB hard-drive is recommended.
Not all computer systems come with a monitor so you may need to buy one separately. Be sure to purchase one which is a reasonable size but bear in mind that you want a budget computer. It may also be important to choose a computer with plenty of USB and FireWire ports but failing that, you can purchase additional USB hubs if and when needed.
High-End Desktop Computer: these can range anywhere from about £500 up to several thousand pounds. The kind of hard-drive you want must be suitable for storing music, video, photos and games. Somewhere between 500GB and 1TB would be classed as high-end. For this kind of computer, a processor speed of at least 3GHz and 2GB RAM should see the system running quickly.
You’ll need ports galore, from USB, FireWire and Ethernet, to 8-channel audio-out. Good graphics cards are important. They should have DVI and HDMI ports and be ATI CrossFire- or Nvidia SLI-ready, connecting you to an HD display so you can watch HD movies and play DX10 games.
