About LogMeIn > Networking

LogMeIn was developed in Budapest as the RemotelyAnywhere product by 3am Labs BT.

In 2006, 3am Labs changed its name to LogMeIn Inc.

LogMeIn is a software service which allows one computer user to remotely access another work or home computer. It allows you to connect to any computer anywhere that has an internet connection, as the remote access is carried out via the web.

The various product versions are designed for both end users and professional help desk personnel. This feature is also open to Linux computers, PocketPC computers and Mac computers. The speed at which this connection runs is impressive, allowing natural and fluid movements even whilst running on high colour quality settings.

The program is very user friendly and easy to set up and is said to be extremely secure.  LogMeIn is compatible with all known firewalls and broadband routers. It can even be used to access a computer on a network that simply doesn’t have a monitor.

Various LogMeIn packages

LogMeIn comes in a number of different product types, each with different features and price-tags depending on which type of access is required and which features are required.

LogMeInFree and LogMeInPro allow computer users remote desktop access with printer access, online chat features (through a web browser), remote sound and file management. There is also a product called LogMeIn Ignition which is an optional add-on that provides access without the web browser.

LogMeIn has a system tool to help computer professionals maintain a computer remotely - this is LogMeIn IT Reach.

LogMeIn Rescue lets professional help-desk personnel fix problems on an end user’s computer remotely. An optional add-on to this is LogMeIn Rescue + Mobile which allows remote access from a computer to a mobile device.

A user can use a product called LogMeIn Hamachi, which provides remote VPN access to a computer.

Added to this, LogMeIn Backup is a separate product in the range which provides an online backup service for a computer.

LogMeIn products use a remote computer protocol that is transmitted via SSL. An SSL certificate is given to each remote computer and is employed for cryptographically protected communications between the remote computer and the accessing computer.

A computer user will access a remote computer using an internet-based web portal – except whilst using LogMeIn Ignition where a stand-alone application is used.
